About Earth Day:

Back in 1970, Gaylord Nelson, a US Senator from Wisconsin, called for an environmental teach-in, coined "Earth Day", to be held on April 22, 1970. A day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. Nelson brought in Denis Hayes to organize participation in the event. Over 20 million people participated that first year. Earth Day is now observed on April 22 each year by more than 500 million people and many national governments in 175 countries.
